I talk to myself a lot. Sometimes it’s a way of thinking out loud, if you will. Sometimes I talk to myself when I want to give myself advice; or when I am motivating myself, or when I have an awesome idea.
And when I talk to myself, I sometimes call myself with my self-given nicknames.
One of my names (a name only me knows) is Rollo. So, you’ll hear me say: ‘I’ll tell you something, Rollo.’
I’ll digress a bit: talking to oneself has to do with being a loner. Granted, I spend most of my time alone, but let’s cut the digression.
Another self-given name I gave myself, if you can stomach the redundancy, is Buzzy. Buzzy has many variations: sometimes it’ll be Buzz-o-villo. Then the villo can at times stand alone: like Villon.
Now, you’re reading a music blog or email, and I’m sure you’re asking what have self-given names got to do with music.
I’ll answer you this way. My first name is Lungile. My surname is Sojini. My penname is L. Sojini. When I was a kid, some cool kids made music names, or music aliases, for themselves. One was Badman, but he pronounced the name Budmun; the other one was Michigan. I then gave myself a music name or alias: LungSoja, taking from my name and surnames.
Alright now… what’s this got to do with anything? Musicians give themselves names all the time, unless you’re Alicia Keys or Beyoncé. Think about Jay-Z. And Jay has got many names: Jigga, Hova… I’m sure if you’re as famous as Jay-Z, people also start giving you names.
And we haven't yet started talking about musicians who seem not to remember their names. Oh, nana. Wh
Yes, I have had several nicknames or aliases in this music industry. I remember first starting out people called me B Rev The Producer LOL! Then it changed to C.I.K. Beatz, then to Strych9 Musik and now I just go by my real name. For me it was about not being stuck or ties to a name as I felt that it would sort of box me in, in some capacity. But when you look at the landscape of music artists, almost everyone has some sort of alias or moniker.
