Worm & the Earlybirds Has Two Singles So Far
But I had more to say about 'Stage Light Whore', their single released in June.
It's nice listening to a woman sing, especially on a pop song. That's the feeling I get as I listen to the early lines in Worm & the Earlybirds's single, 'Stage Light Whore'.Â
Even the band’s vocalist finds reason to be cheerful on the song as she giggles for a bit. This is after she's done asking 'What do you want to find about me? I'm so middle of the road'.Â
The song, which starts with some guitar chords, and some piano notes at some points, is energetic on some parts, sounding like a lullaby on some. Worm & the Earlybirds went for two opposing extremes one one song, and this can be confusing. You're left thinking: why didn't Worm & the Earlybirds choose one – a high energy or meditative tone?
It's the meditative side of the song that I focus on now. The stage light whore of the song is the singer, I take it.Â
Before asking why someone would be interested in her, before the giggling, she sings about wanting to hear herself and hear her sound.
This is a self-referential song; metafictional, as we call it in fiction writing. (The singer is aware that she's singing a song about singing; no wonder the listener will be left thinking: who's the singer? Is the singer singing about themselves or somebody else?)
You can also take 'Stage Light Whore' as a critique on capitalism, fast fashion and the media (tabloid media) – a protest song, if you will.
'Coca Cola sponsors the end of the world', sings the vocalist at some point.
I’m reminded of songs like Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ (‘It’s not about the money’); and I’m also reminded of Sandie Thom’s ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker’ (‘When accountants didn’t have control and the media couldn’t buy your soul’). On that list, you can add John Mayer’s ‘Waiting On the World to Change’.  Â
While ‘Stage Light Whore’ came out in June, Worm & the Earlybirds’ latest single, ‘Springtime Honey Girl’, was released on the fifteenth this month.
Listening to ‘Springtime Honey Girl’ made me realize how powerful ‘Stage Light Whore’ is. The downside to this is that one’ll find the former trivial.
