The Rise and Rise of AmaPiano
It can't be me loving AmaPiano. But hey, AmaPiano is not so bad....
I have to say it. I didn't like AmaPiano, and no doubt: I won't say I'm its greatest fan, but if you had asked me last month what I thought of AmaPiano, I would have said: 'Uyadlala, man. Give me Kwaito anytime, not AmaPiano.'
Why the change?
Well, for a person to respect something, they have to learn more about it.
I guess the first thing one has to ask is: what is AmaPiano?
I remember asking my cousin this question in 2020 or early 2021. (As it turns out my cousin makes AmaPiano beats).
'It's a genre that uses the keyboard mostly,' I remember my cousin saying.
But of course, I was stubborn. I wasn't about to give AmaPiano a chance.Â
Another thing to ask is: when was AmaPiano created? I remember writing about AmaPiano in my novel in 2019, I think, so it was a thing then.Â
According to me, AmaPiano was started in 2018, but this is definitely wrong. Eish. But I might be right. No ngiwrongo. Ngikhumbula in 2018 eTembisa. Or 2017. I used to be a photographer at Boiketlong Pub. And I remember MFR Souls performing there. And hey these guys are said to be the originators of AmaPiano. Izinja izinja kuphela, as one song says.Â
Of course, or maybe, ukhathele ukufunda eli bali lami. But let me say this: since I didn't like AmaPiano, I probably won't know much about when it was created.
But there's somebody who knows these things. Tiisetso Maloma says AmaPiano was created in early 2015.Â
So, a month ago, I didn't like AmaPiano, now I do. What happened?
'If you can't beat them, join them', the saying goes.Â
Where I stay - la ngihlala khona - there's this guy who likes me to download AmaPiano for him. So I guess one can't download music without listening to it.
And then I joined Spotify.
On Spotify, it's all about AmaPiano (mostly).
Even abelungu are jamming to AmaPiano.
I can go on and on and on but for now this should be okay. When I come back to this subject, I want to talk about how I learned to create music from my cousin.
I'll also like to talk about how I started making music (or sort of).
