The New Year is Upon Us
What have you been up to recently? And what are you planning going forward?
Greetings, musicians!
I thought I should write you something. It’s been a while. Perhaps it’s been a month since I posted something.
I’ts cold today and rainy here in Pretoria. How is the music going? How’s life? You guys tend to ignore me, especially when I’m asking for money.
Anyway, some musician sent me an email the other day. They were talking about exchanging playlists.
As for me, what’s happening in my life? Musically, I’ve got a writing gig for Music Review World. It’s a publication that offers paid music reviews. So that’s what I’ve been busy with.
Looking at time, we’re two months away from the new year. It’s going to be the festive season. Do you have any plans? Have you started looking back on the year that’s been, and are you looking forward to the new year?
It’ll be interesting to know what you guys have to think about that. Will you be working on new music? One thing that always nags me is my itch to record some music, but I never really get to doing it. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to it, but in terms of what I will be doing in the next year (2026), I guess I’ll still be reading the books that I’ve started reading this year.
I’ve been reading Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu. You might ask: what has it got to do with music? Well, I’m not reading the book for its musical content, but there are things that the sociologist has to say about music – how it classifies people.
Culture classifies people. People listen to different music. There are factors behind that. So music is one of the ways social structures are created and maintained. I will be reading that book into the new year.
In terms of The Musician, I’ve been posting less. So perhaps I’ll be updating it once in a while like I am doing now.
Anyway, it’s great to have an outlet. Hit me up if there’s anything you want to know. I’d love to hear what you’re planning for the new year – and what you’re reading. Drop me a line!
