L. SOJINI (L.S): Can you tell us about yourself? Where you’re from and what kind of musician you are.
F5Doit: Hey! I go by F5Doit. I'm a songwriter, artist consultant, artist, and audio engineer. I'm from Chicago IL as of a year ago I moved to Florida. My music style ranges from pop to slower music to Hip hop and so on. I make all types of music. I like to keep the sound fresh and fun.
L.S: How did you get into music?
F5Doit: Long journey. Multiple things influenced me to get into making music, when I was younger it was friends and the lack of opportunity at the time. Music gave me a way to express frustrations from life. Music heals all.
L.S: What do you think makes good music?
F5Doit: I think good music is music that generates an emotion in the listener.
If you push play on a song and you feel any type of emotion, I think that’s good music. Good music moves people.
L.S: What are your strengths and weaknesses as a musician?
F5Doit: This is a good question. I'd have to say some of my strengths are dedication, consistency, and catalog size.
I have a very deep catalog of music, and writing comes really natural to me. I'd say some of my weaknesses are surrounded around social media. I create a lot of content but often I lack organization for it. I could do a lot better organizing my social media content.
L.S: What are you currently working on?
F5Doit: I just recently released ‘You're Not Invited’ on all platforms we just crossed 100,000 streams in the first month. Now I’m working on a new single titled ‘Tucked’ (releasing on all platforms June 14th ). I’m really focused on my NFT music project that incentivizes my listeners. A lot of my time is spent on community building surrounding that project.
L.S: How do you approach music? As in, what’s your philosophy when it comes to making music?
F5Doit: Complex simplicity is what I've called it since 2012. I try to keep my music easily understood, but my music may express a more complex issue or feeling.
I start off with dimming the light shuffling through beats my producer sends me. Once I feel that vibe I write it out record it and get it done that day.
I usually try to stem my music vibe off an emotion I want people to feel when hearing it.
LS: What are you most proud of to have achieved as a musician?
F5Doit: I think my biggest achievement as an artist has been independently hitting the radios for a full summer with zero marketing budget, zero guidance or management.
That was a good week because it sparked a lot of conversations amongst independent labels and a good amount of people reached out.
L.S: How do you promote your music?
F5Doit: As of right now my main focus is social media and Discord community building. The community building is the big one I just started doing.
I just recently got into TikTok after long conversations with my producer. I was convinced TikTok is a spot all artist should be at right now for simple easy efficient marketing.
L.S: Favourite musician? Why?
F5Doit: This is a hard question I think my favorite varies. One artist I'd mention is Nipsey Hussle.
I remember listening to him in high school on YouTube he had maybe a few thousand subscribers.
Watching his career take off just from his hard work and focus has to put him number one for me. It’s truly upsetting what happen to Nipsey.
But great lessons can be learned from the amount of work he accomplished and the hustle he had.
L.S: What’s your advice or message to fellow musicians?
F5Doit: Don't sign to labels. If you’re in a situation where you really need quicker money. Don’t sign to labels.
What you need to do is sell these labels your work. Don’t sign to them, sell them couple songs or a project from your catalog.
Put a price on it, stick to it, and let them know that’s the only way you'll do any type of deal.
This way they don’t own you as an artist they just have rights to those few songs.
LS: Can you recommend one musician you’ve worked with that The Musician can interview next? You can share their Twitter handle.
