Never Give Up On Your Music, Says Michigan Rapper
Speatz has just released a new project: Michigan Spaceboy.
Hailing from Michigan, in the United States, Speatz is a musician who’s proud to having created music that he has full creative control over.
With his favourite musician being the rapper Lil Wayne, Speatz listens to beats first. This is his approach to music.
‘I’m really picky about my beat selection,’ the 24-year-old musician says in the interview. When he hears a beat he likes, the next step is to write a chorus or hook, and then proceed to adding verses.
His message to fellow musicians is to never ‘give up on yourself’ and ‘keep pushing’.

L. SOJINI (L.S): Can you tell us about yourself? Where you’re from and what kind of musician you are.
Speatz: I’m a 24-year-old songwriter and recording artist from Michigan that focuses mostly on Hip hop, some RnB/Soul, some pop, Some Country, some Hyper-pop sounds.
L.S: How did you get into music?
Speatz: I got into music young to be honest. Growing up, I was fascinated by current early 2000 acts on that we’re taking over the radio such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Chief Keef, Big Sean, etc. I started songwriting & experimenting with the recording process in 2015, just posting some music to SoundCloud. Doing it all for fun at the time. Personally, I’m a Quality over Quantity artist.
L.S: What do you think makes good music?
Speatz: What makes good music to me is a clean professional sound while being about to create a vibe that people can feel and relate to.
L.S: What are your strengths and weaknesses as a musician?
Speatz: Strengths I have: I formulate a plan before throwing stuff together. I do experiment from time to time but I find having a plan for me is more effective.
Weaknesses I have: I go about music differently. I approach it differently. I get told a lot my sound is different and unique, which is good but I have to find my niche and target audience.
L.S: What are you currently working on?
Speatz: I just dropped an eight-song project on all major streaming platforms.
It’s my first project as an artist. I wanted to have a diverse sound to reach different groups of people.
I’m pushing that at the moment. I will be focusing on some features and some singles leading up to a follow up EP in the future.
L.S: How do you approach music? As in, what’s your philosophy when it comes to making music?
Speatz: My process to approaching music is I usually listen to beats (used to be on YouTube early on but now I find a lot of producers on BeatStars).
I’m really picky actually about my beat selection and how I want to flow on certain beats.
If I hear a beat I really like, I usually write a chorus/hook first and verses after. If I like the beat it takes me anywhere from a day to a week write.
If I struggle to write I lose interest in the beat quickly. I hit up the producer and ask what their exclusive price is. All of my beats except for one I bought exclusive rights. One beat I leased.
L.S: What are you most proud of to have achieved as a musician?
Speatz: Most proud thing I’ve achieved so far is honestly just putting something together that I had 100% creative control over and something that I own. Can’t no one take away what you own, you know!
L.S: How do you promote your music?
Speatz: I’m still experimenting with the promo and marketing. I’ve been getting hella radio DJs and label A&Rs in my DMs so I guess I’m going in the right general direction.
L.S: Favourite musician? Why?
Speatz: My favorite musician…. Lil Wayne to be honest. He’s like the father of the new era of Hip hop. From bringing in rock/metal elements in the music to just the overall music landscape. Wayne I feel had a lot to do with it.
L.S: What's your advice or message to fellow musicians?
Speatz: My message to fellow artists would be to don’t give up on yourself.
Keep pushing. When you give up the haters win. When you give up it don’t get any easier does it.
LS: Can you recommend one musician you’ve worked with that The Musician can interview next? You can share their Twitter handle.
Speatz: A musician I recommend on Twitter that I’ve worked with for one of my songs ‘Vibez’ is (@MonteRaySPMG). A very talented artist that does the rapping but also has the voice to sing as well. He sings the chorus on ‘Vibez’.
L.S: Thank you for talking to The Musician. Remember this is your home. Whenever you have something new to share, hit us up anytime. You can even drop your links here.
