Alessia Longs For The Truth In Her New Song, ‘3 Lies'
A knotty song that demands the listener's close attention.
Alessia’s greatest strength is her voice. Mostly, people listen to music whilst they're busy with life, if you will. And when it so happens that you get distracted from listening to her, Alessia's voice and clarity of words is enough to pull you back into her music.
My biggest gripe with indie music is that the artists can be inaudible. That's not the case with Alessia.
She opens her single, ‘3 Lies', with these words:
Last night, out of the blue, I thought about you
And she follows that with the devastating:
To tell you the truth, I was with someone
Lyrically, it's a complex song. There's a lot of lying going on. The one who discloses her lying demands truth from someone that's lying to them.
I have commended Alessia for clear voice, but I wonder if she has clearly told a straightforward story in this song.
For the most part, ‘3 Lies’ is a sombre song. At one point, Alessia sings:
Tell me the truth
I'm not a fool
Did you meet someone new?
Being fed up, she demands the truth as she seats on the couch, a glass of wine nearby.
On listening to Alessia's voice and songwriting style, I'm reminded of Amy Winehouse and Katy Perry. Alessia is more Amy Winehouse than Katy Perry. In fact, you can say Alessia is the Katy Perry's opposite.
On ‘3 Lies', Alessia's delivery is laid back. She's in no hurry, you can say.
‘Come on baby, give me little something’, Alessia sings almost at the end of the song (the song is play for over five minutes).
Whereas the song is mostly a sombre song, Alessia changes tune on this part and sings it in an upbeat way, but story, or song-wise, I was left wondering: what little something is Alessia is asking for – is it the truth?
‘3 Lies’ comes out on June 24.
